Another scratched bird, this time a Cardinal Woodpecker (Dendropicos fuscescens). This time it's made exactly after my photo from Kenya [link]
Right here the bird is feeding on ants that live in these modified thorns of Whistling Acacia. The acacia provides shelter for the ants while they fight the plant's predators. Very interesting relationship indeed :)

With my three sketchboard pictures I'm participating in Science is Beautiful contest. I would appreciate if you could VOTE FOR ME HERE [link] AND HERE [link] by clicking the thumb up. Thanks! :)

Looking at the thumbnail, I thought this was a picture of the space jockey in "Alien"!

ah, this is great. and, yes, the ant-acacia system is really cool. If I remember right, the acacia also provides food for the ants (little protein-rich bodies on the stems of the leaves), and the ants prtoect from predators, and also kill any other plants that try to grow close to the acacia. This woodpecker is kind of brave. There's lots to like about your picture --- the eye is really alive, the feathers are realistically messy, and the branches have a nice 3-d quality....

Or perhaps it is because the ants are effective against the predators of acacia, but can hardly be effective against their own enemies.

I'm not sure about the food thing, but now that you mention it, I might have heard it somewhere, too. When we were on a safari in Kenya, our guide told us that the ants are able to repel even animals such as giraffe! They keep annoying it, until the animal leaves :D
I suppose the woodpecker could fly off as soon as the ants started attacking, but I think it would take a lot of them to scare off this bird :)
Thank you :aww:
